This is a guide to the main aspects of the law which relate to young drivers and road steam. Different law may apply whether driving on the road or not, this is a guide – consult the law for deeper understanding

If a new learner, think about taking the apprentice to an area where there are fewer hazards – ie public and other vehicles For all drivers and steersman, make sure they are physically strong enough to safely and responsibly operate the controls, and tall enough to have good visibility around the engine. Whether holding a license or not, the majority of the Road Traffic Act will apply so drivers must never drive recklessly or dangerously, or drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol (as per the laws applying to public roads). The majority of insurance providers for road steam have provisions in place for underage / unlicensed drivers but owners / crew should check their own engine policy. |
Driving |
Traction engines require a Category B license. Road rollers require a Category G license. Engines over 7.5 tonnes weight the minimum age is 21 years. For traction engines up to 7.5 tonnes weight the minimum age is 18 years. |
