Each year, the Steam Apprentice Club celebrates the dedication and achievements of its members through the SAC Annual Awards. From technical excellence to volunteering and mentorship, this year’s winners have shown just how bright the future of steam is.
Award Highlights:
Meet Lady Sylvia – the SAC’s very own four-inch scale Burrell traction engine, built by apprentices from the ground up. With support from Steam Traction World and dedicated sponsors, this engine is more than a machine; it’s a learning journey.
Lady Sylvia travels the country attending rallies, giving young people the chance to steam, drive and maintain a real traction engine. She’s become a much-loved feature at events – and a powerful symbol of the next generation’s passion for steam.
In one of the most moving stories of the year, Victoria and Albert – two historic traction engines – were reunited at Amberley Museum after more than 20 years apart. Months of careful preparation, road running and last-minute repairs led to an unforgettable summer moment.
With tearful smiles and coal-streaked hands, the team brought both engines together again – a true labour of love and a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.
The SAC Committee is delighted to welcome Melanie Fisher, a long-time steam enthusiast and advocate for youth engagement. From rally fields to ploughing matches and a decade-long engine restoration, Melanie’s experience is vast and deeply rooted.
Now the proud owner of a 6” Foden, Melanie continues to mentor apprentices and share her love of steam. Her philosophy is simple: we are the custodians of these machines – and the best way to honour that is to pass it on.
For those of you who may have lost your magazine, or if you're just passing through and are wondering what the magazine is like, we're now including magazine downloads here on the website.
From now on we will have the last 4 back issues of Raising Steam for you to download.
To keep it fair for our paying members, each new magazine will be added to the website when the next issue has been published, for example the January edition will be available to download once the April edition has been posted out.

The Steam Apprentice Club runs a log book scheme, where you can record your progress as an Apprentice. The aim of the scheme is to allow you to keep a record of your experience on steam engines.
It also allows enginemen to see what experience a new apprentice has, and lists procedures and areas of engine management to learn.
Also, after you have completed all areas of the log book, both practical and technical, and are eligible for a provisional drivers licence, you can progress to do the Steam Traction Engine Competency Test.
Log books are available for £5. Please contact the NTET Sales Officer, Kathy Smith, for more details. sales@ntet.co.uk.
If you already have a log book, but have run out of space in
sections 2, 3, 4 or 5, you can download extra blank pages HERE.
The Steam Apprentice Club has produces two badges, a fabric badge to be sewn to clothing and an enamel pin badge.
