People in the Past

During our 2025 events, we invited people to remember those who shaped the road traction world but are no longer here today. These names were shared by members and visitors wishing to honour their memory.

Steam Heroes

Every great movement has its heroes – and the world of road steam is no exception.

People of the Past celebrates the remarkable men and women whose passion, skill and determination kept the wheels of steam turning long before preservation became a pastime. From the early pioneers who designed and built these magnificent engines, to the enthusiasts, engineers and hauliers who refused to let them fade into history, these are the people who shaped the road steam movement as we know it today.

Their stories remind us that the NTET’s strength lies not just in the engines themselves, but in the people behind them – the tinkerers, the restorers, the dreamers and the doers who saw steam not as a relic of the past, but as a legacy worth preserving.

So, step back in time and meet the legends who made it possible for today’s enthusiasts to keep the steam spirit alive.

We would like to thank Jeff Shackel for his kind help and support in gathering the content for this important page on the NTET site.
