NTET Photo Competition 2024

Once again we are announcing our annual NTET photographic competition.
The competition is open to members and non-members of the Trust, of all ages.
The family of the late John Cook, who was a great servant of the Trust, presented a cup in his memory to be awarded in a photographic competition.

The competition consists of four categories. A first, second and third place winners will be selected from each category, as well as an overall winner.

The winning photos will be made into the NTET’s 2025 calendar.

A display of pictures will be made at the 2024 AGM where the John Cook memorial trophy will be awarded to the overall winner.

CATEGORIES:

Engine Portraits
A photograph featuring one or more engines posed in a picturesque off-the-road setting, with minimal accompanying modern objects or people.

People
A photograph of one or more adults operating or associated with an engine. They may be wearing period clothing or taking part in a traditional activity related to the operation of the engine.
This category is intended to show people in-action, rather than posing for, or looking at the camera.

Steam On The Road
A photograph featuring one more engines out on the road, with minimal accompanying modern objects or people, possibly hauling a traditional load or seen in a historic location.

Working Engines
A photograph of one or more engines engaging in their traditional working roles, such as driving a sawbench or threshing drum, ploughing a field, hauling a load or rolling a road.
Again, with minimal accompanying modern objects or people.

Entries should be sent via e-mail to photocompetition@ntet.co.uk and be with us by Monday 10th of June in order to be considered by the panel of judges.
You should include full contact details (and age if under 16), and you must specify the category each photo is entered into.
High-Resolution digital photos are preferred. Only one photo per category, per person is allowed.
Your entry into this competition is on the agreement that the NTET has the right to publish your photos, display them on our social media, website and also print the 12 best photos in our 2025 calendar.
First, Second and Third place will be selected for each category by our panel of judges. One overall winner will also be chosen. The decision of the judges is final.
The first-place prize for each section is two memberships of the NTET or SAC, which may be gifted to a friend if you wish. All winners will receive a copy of the 2025 Calendar.
The overall winner will receive a complimentary place on the 2025 Driving Course, and will also receive the John Cook Memorial trophy.
Winners will be announced in the July edition of Steaming magazine, and the John Cook trophy will be awarded at the NTET’s AGM in November.

Alan Holmes

It is with sadness we report the passing of our Rally Authorisation officer, Alan Holmes.

Alan was well known around the midlands area, and could often be seen at road and rail steam events across the country with his camera.
He served for many years as a rally monitor, and more recently he became our Rally Authorisation officer.
Our condolences to his family and friends

David Smith

It is with great sadness we have to report the loss of David Smith. He was admitted to hospital on Thursday, and sadly he passed away on Friday 23rd of February.
David joined the National Traction Engine Trust in 1980. Over his 44 years of service, he became a pivotal member of General Council. During his time managing the Technical Services Unit, he was responsible for writing many of the Trust’s operating systems.
David was elevated to Vice President in 2022. His vast knowledge and friendship will be greatly missed by the Trust and the wider movement.
Our thoughts and condolences are with his wife Julie and family at this sad time.

Engine Owner’s, Driver’s and Crew’s Meeting 2024

The 2024 Engine Owners, Drivers and Crew Meeting was held on SUNDAY 21st January 2024.
The meeting consisted of the usual updates on all matters of interest plus a talk by Mike Harrison of Lincoln Crank and Machine Ltd. about the manufacture and refurbishment of crankshafts.
 
The meeting was recorded for those who could not attend.

The AGM of the National Traction Engine Trust will be held at 2.30pm on Saturday 18th November at the Golden Lion Hotel, 114 High St, Northallerton DL7 8PP.
En-Suite accomodation is available from Friday 17th November.
Please contact Golden Lion Hotel, Northallerton directly to book your room on 01609 777411.
The bar will be open of Friday and meals are available in the Restaurant; you may need to book beforehand.
Alternatively there are pubs & restaurants in the town.
If you wish to join, the Saturday evening meal will be £30 per head. Dress code is informal.
We would like to remind everyone to please book soon for the dinner to enable us to organise things in good time and not at the last minute.

This year the three course dinner is excellent value at £30 per head but we have a limit so book early to avoid disappointment.

AGM visits sat 18th November and Sunday 19th November 2023.

On Saturday 18th we are invited to visit John and Sue Smith at Dalton Cottage Farm, lslebeck, Thirsk, YO7 3BW.
The location is to be found off the A19 south of Thirsk.
Look for NTET signs for the last part of the journey.
There is a wide variety of vintage equipment there plus at least four engines not widely seen outside the county. T
hey have kindly agreed to provide some refreshments and welcome visitors from 10am onwards.

On Sunday morning we are invited to visit the Preston Collection at Anne Preston’s home, Enterpen Farm, Hutton Rudby, TS15 0EJ.
Visitors will be welcome from 10am.
There is an impressive display of engines, vehicles, organs and many items of interest.
Again our hosts will be providing some Yorkshire hospitality as well as the entertainment.

The Meeting

Formal notice of the meeting, along with the Agenda, Reports & Accounts, together with the names of those standing for election and a voting form, has been distributed with the Autumn issue of Steaming.

There will be no ‘live’ online voting although attendees in the meeting itself are able to vote on the day.

Members are encouraged to exercise their votes by submitting their ballot forms either electronically or by post in advance of the meeting. The results will be announced during the AGM. A voting form is published in the AGM Booklet. If submitting by email, please use the form and scan it as an attachment. Please return it by Wednesday 16th November via the postal address stated in the booklet, or email it to: general.secretary@ntet.co.uk

The Election

Rob Clifford-Wing seeks re-election as Chairman
Louise Maunder, Kathy Smith and Mark Waite retire by rotation and offer themselves for re-election.
Andy Rimmell and Charlie Cribbes do not offer themselves for re-election.

NTET Photo Competition 2023

The family of the late John Cook, who was a great servant of the Trust, presented a cup in his memory to be awarded in a photographic competition.


The rules are simple and essentially informal. High resolution photographs are preferred, or images of a suitable print quality, and with modern phones producing quality shots, now is the chance to showcase your talents.
It is a condition of entry that you assign to the NTET the rights to print your photos (credit will be given to the copyright holder) as we plan to use the twelve best photographs from the categories for use in the 2024 calendar.

All submitted images may be used by the NTET on its website and Facebook page The prize for each section is two memberships of the NTET or SAC with the four winners being selected by our panel of judges and the overall winner will receiving a complimentary place on the 2024 Driving Course. The prizes do not have a monetary value, and you can “gift” them to a friend if you choose.

Entries should be in the following four categories:
Engine portraits. An image featuring an engine stood on its own in a suitable back drop, for example, rally field, village green or town centre, or in a yard.
People. An image which captures a person or persons on or around an engine showing the enjoyment they are getting from their involvement with it.
On the road. An image featuring steam on the road. The picture should display what preserving the heritage of steam on the road is all about.
Working engine. An image of an engine working hard on a saw bench, thrashing drum, rolling a road, hauling a load or similar application.


The competition is open to members and non-members of the Trust. Entries should be sent via e-mail to the editor of Steaming at steaming@ntet.co.uk.
Entries should include full contact details and age if under 16.
The competition is open to all ages and the competition entries must be with the editor by Thursday 31st August in order to be considered by the panel of judges
A display of pictures will be made at the AGM where the John Cook memorial trophy will be awarded to the overall winner.
The decision of the judges is final.

DVSA news on securing of loads

The DVSA has recently issued new guidance on “Securing loads on HGVs and goods vehicles”. This will affect many engine owners and crews who transport their engines on HGVs and trailers. Particular sections of interest will be “Plant equipment” and “Vehicles”.

Ffos-y-fran Coal Mine Appeal – Heritage Road Steam Impact

Following on from our update on Friday 7th July where we shared that we had been made aware that the representatives involved in the appeal process for the Ffos-y-fran coal mine were now seeking letters of support from the heritage sector and that a communication via one of those avenues was in circulation. At that time clarification on where to address those letters was unclear.

We can now confirm that the email address we are kindly requested to send our letters of support to is as follows: steamcoal@hsgplc.co.uk. It is also suggested that you may send a copy to your local MP and any other political figure relevant to your region or club if writing on behalf of a society etc.

Letters from individuals are actively encouraged and it is preferable if these are written on a personal basis rather than a template letter. However, we felt it may be helpful if we provided some bullet points of the topics to consider including and a link to the information leaflet put together last year on road steam’s contribution to tourism and leisure along with its estimated extremely minimal CO2 impact.
