One of steam preservation’s most important practical skills will take centre stage in the North East this October.
The Boiler & Engineering Skills Training Trust (BESTT) is running a four-day intensive course in traditional hot riveting, led by Gordon Newton. Combining essential theory with extensive hands-on training, the course is designed for those involved in boiler work and other heavy engineering repairs.
Hot riveting remains fundamental to the maintenance and restoration of historic steam equipment. Its survival depends on experienced practitioners passing their knowledge to a new generation, making practical courses such as this vital to the future of the preservation movement.
The course will run from Monday 12 to Thursday 15 October 2026 at the Stephenson Steam Railway workshop, Middle Engine Lane, Wallsend, North Shields, NE29 8DX.
Places remain available, offering participants a valuable opportunity to develop a traditional engineering skill under expert guidance.
